Job Summary

The engineer will develop substation construction and design standards for AVANGRID’S high and medium voltage system. Write engineering specifications for electrical equipment. Create material specifications for various items; such as transformers, cable, breakers etc. Develop a technical knowledge base to serve as technical SME for electric equipment such as breakers, switches, cable, transformers, switchgear, etc. The Engineer will solve  problems and utilize best practices and knowledge of internal/external business issues to improve processes or projects. Occasional travel to other AVANGRID offices in NY, ME, CT is required.


Perform detailed engineering analyses, designs and calculations using standard methodology & principles & other viable approaches. Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve problems or to improve processes/services.

Duties: Solves unique standards engineering problems. Identify innovative solutions. E.g. forensic analysis, material evaluations, material applications and construction standards.

Prepare, maintain, & understand drawings (e.g. schematics, one-line diagrams). Develop & specify equipment, assemble documents & other requirements for assignments.
Duties: Serve as SME for substation equipment (e.g. cable, transformers, switches, breakers etc.). Learns to anticipates internal/external business issues and recommend process improvements. May participate in Industry associations. Acts as a facilitator & review engineering work of others. Recognizes & make recommendations with respect to customer & stakeholder needs. Explains concepts & influences others.

Duties: may lead cross functional or  engineering teams to complete assigned tasks and projects.
Assist in guiding  engineers in standards engineering methodology.  Apply design standards, industry codes, design criteria, guidelines & AVANGRID polices/procedures.

Duties: Possesses knowledge and interprets processes and standards related to electrical substation equipment. Recommends solutions and best practices where appropriate. Represents Standards on projects, task forces and studies.

Duties: Forecast, plan, schedule, monitor, control budget/estimates, construction plans and material orders.

Skills and Requirements

Education: BS Degree
Experience: 5 Years minimum.

Requires a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited college/university, at least 5 years of industry experience performing engineering duties in Substation or related technical work.

Technicall skills:
The Engineer Possess experience in electric substation standard and related engineering work. The engineer possess knowledge about industry standards and requirements such as NERC, FERC,  NYISO and ISO-NE. Coordinate with Iberdrola Global Work Practice groups to complete AVANGRID’s input on Iberdrola Network Standards (INS) reviews and updates. Collaborate in cross-functional teams to align standards across the organization.

Possess knowledge and skills in Engineering along with related business practices and procedures. Able to communicate technical engineering or related issues and work to persuade others. Applies team effectiveness skills; contributes to the achievement of team goals.

Avangrid employees may be assigned a system emergency role and in the event of a system emergency, may be required to work outside of their regular schedule/job duties.
