Job Type: Regular Position Description RAND Corporation's Office of General Counsel (OGC) is seeking a highly motivated, creative paralegal to join our team. Reporting directly to the Vice President, General Counsel, & Corporate Secretary, the selected candidate will play a key role in operating and advancing RAND's litigation support processes, policies and procedures system, and other core functions of RAND's legal department. About RAND OGC We are a small, passionate, mission-focused department that utilizes a team-based approach to support the entire enterprise - everything we do is for the purpose of enabling RAND to deliver on its mission. Our highly collaborative approach enables us to confidently provide thoughtful advice on OGC's core functional areas, which include Legal Services, Corporate Governance, Ethics & Compliance, and Privacy. While each of our team members have specialist skills, we are each also intellectually curious generalists who engage across the full range of issues and opportunities experienced by RAND. The Paralegal Role RAND's paralegals work collaboratively with other OGC team members as well as colleagues at all levels across the organization, in both project leadership and resource (as-needed support) roles. Lead responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to: * Working closely with the relevant OGC attorney and outside counsel in support of litigation-related activities, including fact and document investigation, discovery, as well as issuance and management of legal holds;
* Executing our third-party subpoena response process;
* Day-to-day administration of RAND's Corporate Policy & Procedure System, including review and markup of proposed new or revised documents to align with expectations for phrasing and format;
* Managing RAND's intellectual property portfolio in conjunction with internal subject matter experts and outside counsel;
* Department operations, including corporate records management, ownership of the department's intranet and SharePoint interfaces; and support for department planning and budgeting;
* Preparing communications and correspondence; reviewing/proofreading documents; and
* Special projects and department initiatives as assigned, demonstrating high levels of responsibility and self-direction, with appropriate coordination with OGC attorneys. Additionally, this role may provide as-needed support to other OGC team members in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to: * Coordination and review of materials prepared for meetings of RAND's Board of Trustees (Directors), as well as support for Board events;
* Activities relating to RAND's Ethics & Compliance program, including communications and compliance assurance actions; Qualifications Required: * Six (6) years of relevant experience working within a legal department, law firm, government entity, or organization similar to RAND;
* High degree of affinity for RAND's mission and core values ;
* Strong desire to learn new skills, confront new and complex problems, and develop expertise in a variety of tasks and assignments of increasing complexity;
* Detail-oriented with the ability work effectively under pressure, use good judgment, effectively prioritize assignments, and operate with limited supervision;
* Demonstrated experience managing, communicating, and working with highly sensitive/confidential information with appropriate discretion and care;
* Proven interpersonal, customer service, and communication (written and verbal) skills; and
* Advanced knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office and related software applications. Preferred: * Substantive experience in a mix of the lead responsibilities described above.
* Previous experience working for a non-profit organization or government contractor.
* Experience tracking project actions and progress.
* Paralegal certification is a plus. Education Requirements Bachelor's degree is required. Security Clearance The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance and DHS Fitness is required for this position. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance. Location This role will be based at RAND's Santa Monica, CA (Los Angeles area) headquarters. This position is eligible for RAND's hybrid work environment, which enables a blend of on-site and remote work. OGC team members have discretion in determining when to work remotely, however, given the nature of the role, some on-site presence will be required.
